When we were children, everyone was giving us advices about what we could and could not do. I do not recall all of them; but I have some very clear memories. I remember drinking the milk that my grandmother had just milked from our cows, and then sneaking around to see if I could get another fil... Read more...

At a very early age I seemed to have a profound knowledge of and belief in The Truth.

It was a long time ago that I left my country Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the beginning of the war, before the bombings of Sarajevo started my mother insisted my father get her a gun, so that she can protect us should there be need for it while he was at work. Once the Serbs started bombarding the city, both my parents realized that a gun wont be enough to ensure our safety. So my mother, 7 month old brother and 7 year old self left the country and like many, became refugees. While we escaped into the safety of Istanbul, most families stayed in the war. They either didn't get the change to leave, or decided to stay hoping that it wont last long.
I was born and raised in the capital city of Bosnia – Sarajevo. As the capital, it was, and still is, the largest city in the region, and contains a great number of historical landmarks and cultural and historical attractions. However, as the capital city, it has also undergone the most modernization, and many historical elements were lost.
During my research visit to Bosnia in the summer of 2011, I went to visit my mother-in-law in her hometown Jajce (pronounced as ‘Yayse’). While she moved to Wisconsin with her family as refugees in 1996, she came that summer to visit her family. I decided to meet some of my in-laws, and see the city.

On September 11th 2001, the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists. But that is not what we are here to remember today. We are here to remember how our nation rose from the ashes after an attack to the heart of America. We are here to remember how every race and religion came together as one to pull through the losses.
When we were children, everyone was giving us advices about what we could and could not do. I do not recall all of them; but I have some very clear memories. I remember drinking the milk that my grandmother had just milked from our cows, and then sneaking around to see if I could get another filling; the smell of the fresh tarhana soup; waiting impatiently for the freshly baked bread; learning that having chicken for a meal was not so easy as it had to be plucked and cleaned and cooked... Unfortunately, my son has no such memories, nor will he seem to have in the near future.
