There are many different variations of calendars and New Year’s dates around the world. The vast majority of the world uses a solar calendar called the Gregorian Calendar to help organize people’s lives, however there are also cultures and countries that rely on other calendar systems for determining significant and religious dates.

One of the other well known calendars is the Hijri Calendar. Muslims use this lunar calendar all around the world to determine important dates such as Eid.  Muharram is the first month of the Hijri Calendar and the first day of Muharram is acknowledged as the day of the Islamic New Year.

On this day, Muslims celebrate the beginning of a new year which marks the “hijra” meaning the migration of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.) from Makkah to Madina. Each month starts with the sighting of the lunar crescent. Since the Hijri Calendar is eleven to twelve days shorter than the Gregorian Calendar, each year the Islamic New Year comes eleven or twelve days earlier than the year before.

Greetings of the Islamic New Year are also abundant and unique. Muslims take this opportunity to wish well upon and pray for their brothers and sisters in Islam and also for the entirety of the world. Here we have listed some of the many variations that can be used when greeting one another on this blessed New Year.
